First show of 2015 - HRM Steampunk Sympsium

We're back at it for 2015 and I'm hoping that I can be a bit better at the upkeep of the blog and the goings on of Wyng'd Lyon. I'll do my best but I can make any promises.

Last night, January 15, 2015, Cindy and I loaded up and hit the road for Long Beach for our first show if the year, HRM Steampunk Symposium.

After leaving an hour later than we wanted last night we got to the Queen Mary with an hour to unload, which for Cindy and I is an amazing amount of time.

We checked in with the vendor coordinator, found our booth space and had everything out of the truck in a total of 30 minutes.  The whole evening was a comedy of errors though, from the dolly having a mind of its own in the hardwood floors of the Promenade Deck, the wheel of my suitcase deciding that it was going to stop work and literally go sideways, right down to checking into our room and discovering that I booked a room with two twin beds instead of two queens. Certainly not conducive for sleeping 4 people, so back to the front desk to upgrade the room so no one had to sleep in the bathtub.

Once the room issue was straightened out, we went to find the bar and settled in with some friends for a couple hours of laughing and swapping stories.

After finally turning in a bit after midnight, we both slept like the dead and are now working on caffeinating ourselves and waiting for the maintenance guy to come fix the shower. Yep, the fun continues!

Oh look the maintenance guy just showed up and I need more coffee.

More to come as the day progresses!

HRM Steampunk Symposium Review - Sunday (Part IV)

Continued from Part III

Morning rolls around pretty quickly after you finally pass out sometime after 1:30 am. I'm not sure what woke me up, but I found myself staring at the ceiling in the hotel bed, while Cindy was sleeping peacefully. Since the alarm clock on the other side of the room was blocked by the chair, I grabbed my phone thinking it was some where close to 7:30 or so. Wrong, it was 6 am, ye gods shoot me now or at least hit me with a brick so I could sleep for another hour or two.

I rolled over and tried to get back to sleep and was almost successful until my phone alerted me with a text message (of course the one night I forget to shut that particular notification off I get a message - curse you Murphy) from my father in law, wishing me a great and productive day. I love that I get those messages from him and a couple friends as well. It really gives me a great start to the day even if it was at 6:30 am. I ended up tossing and turning until 7:30 ish when Cindy finally woke up and then jumped in the shower.

Of course Murphy was still having fun and decided that 3/4 of the way through my shower, I didn't need any more hot water. I was not amused and promptly removed myself from the shower to get dressed and go make myself a much needed cup of coffee before texting my husband so I could chat with him and the kids on Skype since I wasn't going to be home until about 10pm. There is something to be said for technology in cases like this. Of course it also leaves open all sorts of hilarious moments like when Cindy got out of the shower :

My son: "Mommy, where is Cindy?"
Me: "She just got out of the shower."
My son: "Can I see her?"
Me: "...... She needs to get dressed Tarin"
My son: "Oh."
Cindy busts up laughing from the other side of the hotel room.
Me to my husband who is laughing in the background: "He gets that from you!"
My husband: "He's just looking out for me!"
Of course my son thinks it's hilarious just because we're all laughing.

Ah, out of the mouths of babes.

After chatting with my kids and husband, Cindy and I started to pack up our suitcases. If we had been coherent enough on Saturday night, we would have been smart and started packing and arranging things then, but we had too much fun at the Ball and then laughing and giggling at our neighbors until all hours of the morning. But we had to deal with the two suitcase explosions first thing in the morning, which actually didn't take that long to get taken care of. The next bit of fun was us getting our suitcases and other stuff to the car before heading up to the vendors room. I think we sat there for 20 minutes figuring out a process to get the crap down there and then to get the other necessities, read: cash box, coffee, brains, and us, up to the vendor hall.

Once we got the plan worked out, Cindy took her stuff down and then came back up for the items that needed to be taken upstairs, well most of them. Then it was my turn and let me tell you, hauling a heavy suitcase (dear god why did I bring 3 pairs of boots!) in a steel boned corset it quite an interesting feat. Even more interesting it getting said suitcase into the back seat (club cab) of a pickup truck, but I did it with little bodily harm to myself and very little swearing, not like I had enough breath to swear and wrestle with the suitcase at the same time though.

Ok! Suitcases in the truck, time to head back up to the hotel room and grab the rest of the stuff to take up stairs, like the plastic tub with the bottle of whiskey and wine as well as our change of clothes to breakdown in. Mission accomplished and I didn't spill any of my coffee either.

Me in my Airship Captain's outfit
Sunday's day of vending went pretty quickly and was a pretty good day with everyone getting their last minute purchases. I ended up with a couple potential custom orders for after the show which makes me quite happy. Friends stopped by to visit and we chatted with other vendors during the slow times to see how everyone was doing.

By the time 4 pm came around, Cindy and I could feel ourselves fading. At some point I ended up loosening the lacing on my corset because one of the pieces of boning was sitting on my hip bone weirdly and causing a bruised spot. The things we do for fashion, right ladies? ;)

As soon as the last customer was out the door, the corset came off and instead of heading out to the restroom to change (switch shirts was all I had to do) I performed the age old trick of putting on one shirt and taking the other one off underneath it. Cindy opted to go change in the restroom of course she had a bit more to change into that I did. There is something to be said for wearing dark pants with your costume that you don't have to change out of.

Full view of the costume (still a work in progress)
Breakdown is always a double edged sword. It means I get to go home and sleep in my own bed, but it also means that the fun weekend has come to an end and it's time to head back to the real world and real job.

Of course I never know where to start with breaking things down either. My booth help is always the one to ask "How do you want to do this?" and my response is always "I have no fricken' clue." You'd think after vending all the time I would have some sort of plan. Nope, I don't. I usually stand in the booth for at least 10 minutes trying to figure out how I want to start putting things away and this event was no different.

While I sat there trying to get my brain in gear, Cindy started to pack up her art and such and by the time she was there I actually had things planned out. "I love it when a plan comes together."

This year there were no instances of me smacking Cindy in the need with a clothing bar for the gridwall (thankfully), but there was lots of giggling and laughing and throwing of things. I think we actually got packed up in just under an hour. Go us!

Cindy dresses as my First Mate
Then came the conundrum of getting everything outside. (Remember the load in over in Part I?), yeah we did  too and we really weren't looking for a repeat of that. Thankfully the hotel was letting us use the main elevator to load out! Wooohooo!

Now when we loaded in, the sun was out, when we loaded out, not so much. It was 5:30 and well it was fairly dark and there was only two of us which meant, one would have to sit with the stuff outside while the other schlepped everything downstairs, but that also meant that the remaining stuff upstairs was left unattended. See where this is going?

Booth
So we got creative, the grid wall went down on the dolly first and then we loaded all the tubs onto it. Cindy made a couple trips down with smaller items like stands and such that couldn't be put into boxes and shoved them into the cab of the truck. When she got back up stairs we began the journey towards the elevator with a *very* heavy load and the carpet that we had to roll across didn't make the job any more difficult, then it was out the door to the hardwood floor....(yes I was sliding on the floor again) and over to the gangplank to the platform for the elevator. Things were going smoothly until we got the front tire of the dolly stuck not once but twice. Ok, down we go.....uh Cindy how are we going to stop this thing?

Packing up
We actually didn't have much problem getting the dolly stopped but we did have a couple pieces start to slide off the dolly, which were caught by Cindy. Ok, into the elevator and down we go, out of the elevator and oh crap....there go some of the boxes from the front of the grid wall. Pick them up and off we go, aw crap there goes the stand for the ascots. Whoops! it's not round anymore. Oh well...let's get the truck loaded.

Cindy sat with the dolly while I went and got the truck. The  drawback of using the grid wall as a base for everything is that everything has to be removed because the grid wall goes into the truck first. We're still working on a better system for this - or maybe just a 3rd person to help out (hint hint Tawmis).

Grid wall in - check
Plastic tubs in - chuck
Suitcases removed from the cab and put in the back  - check
Rest of the stuff shoved into the cab of the truck - check

Time: 6 pm - let's go home.

Me after Con :)
Cindy, chipper as always
The ride home was pretty mellow, we traveled down to Oso Parkway where we stopped at Dairy Queen for dinner, and ice cream, made a stop for gas and then drove back to San Diego, well Casa de Oro really, to unload the truck and then I dropped of Cindy and headed home to go sleep in my own bed. I made it home by 9:15 pm, counted out the cash box, tallied up the totals and then went in and PTFO'd in bed because I had to get up at 4:00 am to be to work at 5 am.

All in all it was a great con, the room we were in was beautiful and we seemed to have a lot more traffic than last year. I'm really looking forward to going back again next year as well.

I really owe a debt of gratitude for Tawmis for all his help with loading up and dealing with all my text messages with photos as well as keeping the Wyng'd Lyon Facebook page  as well as the Original Cin Facebook page updated. He help was invaluable and his updated added a light hearted mood when things got a bit tense for us while we were vending.

A special thanks goes to Cindy as well, for sharing in my madness and coming with me to vend for the weekend. I always have such a great time hanging out and being generally silly when we're at events.

Also a big thank you goes out to all the customers that came and shopped our booth! With out you the weekend would not have been as enjoyable. Everyone was so friendly and pleasant to deal with and we enjoyed making new friends and associated this time around.

Now it's time for me to get a few more days rest and then start prepping for Wild West Con in March out in Tucson. I hope to see many of you there.

Thank you all for taking the time out to follow us on this journey and read my ramblings too!

Until next time, take care!

Grand Opening Recap

First off, I want to say "Thank you!!!!" to everyone who came out for Wyng'd Lyon Creations grand opening celebration on September 29, 2012.

You are all amazing with your support and patronage!! People like you are the ones who make running a business worth the time and effort.

I'd like to put out a very special thank you to the following people:

My dear friend Tawmis Logue from Pirate Booty &  Never Ending Nights. With out all his hard work promoting things not only on the Wyng'd Lyon social media sites but also on his own pages, and all his support in keeping me from freaking out because of the level of stress I was dealing with, I would have been a total wreck come Saturday morning. Besides that he gives some pretty damn good hugs! I'm fortunate to have such a great person keeping me grounded and from running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

Katie is another one of those great people that I am honored to call a friend. She took the time out of her crazy, busy schedule and made all the food for the grand opening. Not only is she a fabulous person, she makes some seriously amazing food!

The DJ of the day: Michael over at DramaFree Productions. He spun some great tunes and endured the heat  outside to keep things going. If you need a DJ here in San Diego, check him out!

And last, but not least, my husband Tom. He's been there to deal with the ups and downs of everything and has been supportive of this endeavor. He's done all the installation work at the shop and helped set things up as well as took care of the kids so I didn't have to worry about them running rampant around the parking lot.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming days with the shop and growing the business. The grand opening was just the first of many events to happen. so please stay tuned for more.

Here are some of the photos, more to come soon!

Grand Opening Update

Things are coming together slowly but I still have a ton of work to do for the grand opening on September 29, 2012.

I'm slowly adding raffle items as they come in and all the other little details.

We're going to have some great music by Michael over at Drama Free Productions

Photo by Pat @ GCat Studios
One of our raffle items is going to be a custom piece of art by Cindy over at Original Cin, the very same very talented lady that did the artwork of me for the grand opening flyers. In addition to the raffle item, there will be prints of her work for sale as well.

Another item, which was so kindly donated is from Pat at GCat Studios. It's an amazing photo of the San Diego Trolley as seen below and will be matted and framed.

As I get more raffle items in, I'll post some info and a photo if I have one.

Until then have a great day!

Sometimes you really just need some help

I'll admit it, I'm horrible at asking for help, it's just one of my quirks. I love to help everyone I can, but I very very rarely ask for help.

We'll with my life as nuts as it has been between moving to a new (at least new to me) house, herding two kids, leasing a retail space for my studio and to actually do business out of, plus working full time, things have slipped through the cracks, like this blog.

So I finally made the decision to enlisted some help and without further adieu I'm happy to introduce my friend Tawmis, who is a fabulous guy, a damn good writer and lets me harass him on a regular basis plus he has some pretty fun blogs/webpages like Pirate Booty & Neverending Nights. This also means there should be more regular updates here and everywhere else. Yay!

But for now....I'm back to running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

Gaslight Gathering 2012

I'm currently gearing up for my weekend at Gaslight Gathering II and trying not to run around too much like a chicken with my head cut off.

I've got a lot of great new vests on the sewing table, even a few in kids sizes that will hopefully be completed by load in tomorrow morning and maybe a few more to be hung up when I come in on Saturday. I also did another run on ascots and purchased a nifty new display for them as well.

Cindy over at OriginalCin will have some of her prints in the booth as well and we have some great Absinthe glasses this year for sale as well.

If you're going to be at Gaslight Gathering II, stop by and say hi!

Guest Interview & Giveaway from OriginalCin

Giveaway is now CLOSED!!!

Our second giveaway running until the end of March is from my dear friend (and partner in crime for some of the shows I do), Cindy from OriginalCin. She's a fun loving person and a great artist to boot!

Here's my interview with her:

Colleen: What got you started in your business ?

Cindy: I always was an artist, since I was a kid. I remember being eight years old and selling hand drawn greeting cards in my front yard to my neighbors. Some kids sold lemonade. I sold drawings. I began drawing character sketches for gamer friends when I started on the internet, just for fun.  After a while, when I started to develop a skill, I thought "huh, People are always asking me for art, why not start selling commissions and prints?"  And much to my surprise, people were willing to pay for it.

Colleen: How long have you been in business?

Cindy: I started doing art commission work back in 1998, when I was introduced to the internet. I had so many gamer friends who had other gamer friends that wanted sketches of their RPG characters. I didn't start selling my craft work until 2010 when I wanted to expand what I did. I started making hair clips and other sundries.

Colleen: What are you focused on right now?

Cindy: Right now? My art. I love to draw. Its what I always have done since I was little. I try to improve myself with every sketch I do. For a while there I was falling into some lazy habits with my work. But for the last two years I have been trying to push myself further and further towards improvement. Its an eternal process.

Colleen: Where do you get your inspiration and ideas?

Cindy: My friends. Seriously. I have tons of creative friends who inspire me everyday; crafters, illustrators, writers, and costumers. The list goes on and on. When someone gets bitten by the creative bug its infectious. I need to be a part of that as well and share with them.

Colleen: How would you describe your personal style?

Cindy: Quirky. Definitely quirky. I have a weird sense of humor and I tend to paint the world in broad colorful strokes.

Colleen: What does the handcraft/DIY movement mean to you? Where do you see it going?

Cindy: For me its a sense of community. The DIY crowd have been so warm. Everyone wants to share with everyone else and everyone revels in eachother's work. Its nice. Its like a huge think tank...but with more hot glue.
Colleen:  How do you balance things like family, work and your crafting/art business?

Cindy: Well, I don't have children. I have a husband, two cats, and about 12 fish in a 100 gallon tank. My husband supports my crafting habit. He knows its my way of unwinding and tends to get out of my way when I'm on a roll. Not to mention he is a bit of a DIY guy himself and loves woodworking. Its easy to balance your habit when you live with another "user".

Colleen: Do you have specific things you do to keep yourself motivated or things you do to handle the stress?

Cindy: I make lists. LOTS of lists. I also find other friends to create with. Arting in groups! It keeps you focused, not to mention helps if you need a little girly bitch fest WHILE you are working. Doing art is my stress relief. Sitting and sketching or sewing focuses me and helps me keep my "normal" life under control.

Colleen: Are there any local businesses or artisans that you are exited about right now?

Cindy: Oh GOD I am addicted to etsy. Seriously. How awesome is that place? Its not really a local business but it really excites me to see other people and their work.
An artisan I am particularly inspired by these days is Shing Khor form Sawdust Bear (http://www.sawdustbear.com/). She is amazing with what she does. She has a thriving business but is always 100% true to who she is as an artist. I admire that. I hope someday I can be that.

Colleen: Any tips for setting up a table for vending?

Cindy: Make friends with your neighbors! Seriously. They will help you out. We're all in this together!

Colleen: Do you have any upcoming shows that you are doing?

Cindy: I'll be doing Artists Alley at Anime Conji in San Diego March 16th - 18th. I'll have prints and will be taking commissions! Also, Colleen, from Wyng'd Lyon is kind enough (AGAIN! I owe her a HUGE BEER!) to have some of my clips and prints at Gaslight Gathering May 11th - 13th.

Colleen: Do you have any suggestions for getting your name out to the public?

Cindy: Hell, I'm still working on that myself. Right now what is working for me is always keeping my blog current. Showing people what I do, how I do it, and just talking about what I love keeps an interest and most of all  keeps me motivated.

Colleen: What is one thing you would like people to know about you or your Art?

Cindy: I do what I love. Period. Granted, it might not be a mass market type of deal but dangit I have so much fun!

Colleen: Do you have a website, blog, store front ?

Cindy: You can find my art blog at www.originalcin.net I also have an etsy store at http://www.etsy.com/shop/CinsAngel

Colleen: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Cindy: I...got nothing. CHEERS!

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

At the urging of a couple friends I finally created a Facebook Group for my business.

I've also got a few items listed for sale in my Etsy store with more to come. I do need to get better a setup for photos.

I also decided that I need to get a couple child sized dress forms for photography of the kids clothing I've done. A few photos of the items I have done recently are below.

Boy's shirts:

Girl's dresses which also have a matching diaper cover (not shown in the photo)
